How to write effective tracking prompts
Tips for writing prompts that actually surface useful AI visibility data for your brand and category.
What makes a good prompt?
A good tracking prompt mirrors the kind of question a real customer would ask an AI assistant when looking for a product or service like yours. The closer your prompts match real-world intent, the more useful your data becomes.
Be specific about intent
Instead of "best CRM", try "best CRM for small remote teams". Specific prompts surface specific competitors and reveal niche positioning gaps.
Cover the buyer journey
- Discovery — "What are the top tools for X?"
- Comparison — "Brand A vs Brand B for Y"
- Validation — "Is Brand A any good for Z?"
Avoid prompts that always mention you
If a prompt directly names your brand, the AI will obviously talk about you. Track prompts that ask the AI to recommend something — that is where real visibility matters.
Refresh prompts regularly
Trends change. Review your prompts every few months and update them based on new product features, market shifts, or seasonal interests.
